There are a number of common fish species anglers pursue in Illinois, including the native redear sunfish.
Redear sunfish are named for their distinctive ear flap, which features a red border on males and an orange border on females. In addition to the spines along their back, common to many sunfish varieties, they range in color from yellow to green along their back and white along their belly. A freshwater variety, redear sunfish are found in deep water, and unlike their close cousin, the bluegill, will rarely, if ever, come up to feed at the surface. They prefer warm freshwater environments and can be found in lakes, rivers, and streams. Concerning bait, this variety of sunfish prefers natural baits such as earthworms, crickets, and grubs. In addition, they are also sometimes called shellcrackers due to their fondness for aquatic snails. For the most part, mature redear sunfish are just under a foot and weigh in at around eight ounces.
