In 2021, under Mr. Heist’s leadership and direction as Chairman, the Milton Hershey School Trust invested $350 million in an initiative that will see the construction of as many as six early childhood resource centers (ECRCs) throughout the state of Pennsylvania. These ECRCs, which serve children from infancy through 5 years of age, have been designed to meet the needs of economically disadvantaged students and those living in at-risk environments. Services will be provided to children at no cost to their families. All ECRCs will operate independent of the MHS core model but will remain subsidiaries of the school. The first facility was planned for Derry Township, with resources for up to 150 students. A highlight of the resource center’s services is a core early learning program that targets social, emotional, and cognitive development, as well as traditional academic learning.

Committed to providing underserved students with a cost-free education, the Milton Hershey School is working to build six Early Childhood Resource Centers (ECRCs) throughout the state of Pennsylvania as part of its $350-million Early Children Education Initiative. Among its most recent efforts, it released plans for its first ECRC, which will be located in Derry Township. The two-story Derry Township ECRC is expected to encompass 50,827 square feet and include educational outdoor spaces, and furnish free education for 150 students, from newborns to age 5. Studies have shown early childhood education programs can improve kindergarten-readiness for underserved students, increasing the likelihood that they will perform at a similar level to students from higher-income families. The Derry Township ECRC plans to open its doors in 2023 and employ 80 people. |
